WAN (Wide Area Network) - an explanation
(1) Network that spans large geographic area relative to office and campus environment
of LAN (Local Area Network). Characterized by having much greater transfer delays
due to laws of physics. (2) Private network facilities, usually offered by public telephone
companies but increasingly available from alternative access providers (sometimes
called Competitive Access Providers or CAPs), that link business network nodes.
